Te Kohanga Taiao: A Nature Play and Education Hub
The Green Lab, in collaboration with the Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park and Hummingbird Coffee Roasters, has established a new nature-based playground. This space is designed to encourage greater public access to natural settings and foster a stronger, more profound relationship with the environment.
The location is set to become a central point for education, aimed at promoting both awareness and a deeper respect for the rich biodiversity that exists within its borders.
Historical and Cultural Significance
This parcel of land holds significant cultural importance to local Ngāi Tahu sub-tribes (hapū) and families (whānau). Historically, the region formed a large part of a complex wetland system surrounding the New Brighton area. Its traditional name is Ōruapaeroa.
The Green Lab's Mission
The Green Lab focuses on developing urban green areas in Ōtautahi Christchurch that help cultivate strong community bonds and enhance overall well-being. Their green spaces serve as catalysts for community development and ensure people can connect with nature even within the city landscape.
Project Completion and Maintenance
Named Te Kohanga Taiao, the project reached its completion in June 2024 and is currently managed and maintained by the AOFP..
